El Hierro, also known as ‘Meridian Island’, is the smallest and farthest south west of the Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean just off the north-west coast of mainland Africa.

One of the most famous elements from the island are the deformed sabinas (Spanish for junipers) due to the constant wind.

The Canary Islands were formed by volcanic activity. El Hierro, despite being the smallest island, has the largest number of volcanic cones (around 500).

Due to the latest submarine eruption, news about El Hierro travelled all over the world. It’s currently being closely monitored by the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands and National Geographic Institute’s seismic monitoring station in Valverde.
